'Year
of adventure' awaits you
Whatever your activity walking, cycling, mountaineering or sightseeing we can
provide the perfect base for your holiday or weekend
break.
Spectacular Scenery
Where the mountains meet the sea. Wasdale Valley and Wastwater Lake voted Britain’s
favourite view 2007 as seen on national TV, is located a mere 9 miles away from
Calder House Hotel, enjoyably the ideal location to explore this beautiful part
of the western lakes and mountains.
Step back in Time
In 1882 coincidentally the same year Calder House was built, Wasdale because
of its proximity to the central fells saw the birth of British rock climbing
and the area became the obvious base for pioneering climbers.
In the late nineteenth
century a famous local inn keeper ‘Auld Will Ritson boasted that Wasdale had
the highest mountain in England, the deepest lake, St Olafs the smallest church
and the biggest liar, the liar being himself.
“The lees Aa tell, Isn’t malicious they’re nobbut gert bit exaggerations”
Seascale of course is itself a haven for the avid walker and cyclist. It boasts
a fine wide safe sandy beach with lovely walks to the due south over the dunes
towards Ravenglass, home of the La’al Ratty Steam Railway built in 1875 to transport
iron ore for the Furness railway latterly a major tourist attraction transporting
the eager sightseer through the beautiful Eskdale valley.
A newly improved cycle
path takes the coastal route towards the picturesque seaside village of St Bees,
start of the coast to coast cycle route taking the path used by the Romans to
Hadrian’s Wall then across country to Newcastle upon Tyne.
Not everyone of course is a dedicated walker or enthusiast cyclist and for those
who prefer a more leisurely mode of travel.
We are perfectly situated on the
main coastal railway line with direct links to Barrow in Furness with its naval
history of master shipbuilding and the historic city of Carlisle and its castle
where the tragic Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned with its fine selection of
quality shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.
